Taming Closet Chaos

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

It took me all summer but I finally got it done! I had it on my list of summer projects for weeks and weeks, but just never got around to it. I know I was subconsciously moving it further and further down the list because I was really dreading it, but –tah daaa!

It is now finished – complete—done—over--- and definitely off the list! And let me tell you, IT FEELS GREAT!!

No, I have not lost 50 pounds and no I have not moved a mountain, but I did get the linen closet cleaned out and organized!!! My linen closet is not that big. It is not wide, but is fairly deep, so things tend to get pushed to the back- in –the- corner- in- the- dark and never seen again!

It is also right by the kid’s bathroom,( which in itself is a handicap from an organized closet’s perspective) and it houses way more than linens. I keep all kinds of supplies in there!

When there’s a great sale and I have amazing coupons, I tend to stock up on things like shampoo, soap and toothpaste. It gives me a feeling of security – especially in the unstable economy we live in now--- to know that if I have to do without something it won’t be deodorant! So I have at least a year’s supply in my linen closet. Of course all those bottles, tubes and boxes can become a real mess.

The solution? CONTAINERS!!

This is what I did: I took EVERYTHING out of the linen closet and began to sort. I put like items together and then placed them in plastic containers. I labeled the containers, so I know exactly what is in each one.

The bonus is that when you need something, you just pull out the container( it works like a drawer), get out what you need and push it back in.

There is no digging in the back. There is no knocking everything else over while you get to the bottle you need that is being dug out of the back. It is a great solution!

Also, to make your sheets and blankets look neat and tidy on the linen closet shelf, fold them carefully and place the folded edges toward the outside of the shelves. Seeing the open edges of the linens, tends to make it look worse, so just folding them neatly and placing them in the right direction will make a big difference.

I am no longer afraid of that closet. I no longer open and shut its door quickly for fear that something may jump out at me. I just open the door, look and enjoy the fact that my mission is finally accomplished!
