Shirley Suchland has been framed!

Okay, not really. The actual story is that she has been framing—for almost 2 decades.

“I started out as a floral arranger at the Ben Franklin when it was here in Minster. The owner asked if I would want to learn matting and framing. I had always been carpentry minded—hammer and nails, cutting and measuring—so it seemed a good fit.” Boy was it ever! She was trained and then became the official framer there until the store closed. She loved what she did, so she bought the equipment and opened her own store.

She’s been doing it since 2001, and has enjoyed every moment of serving her customers and finding the best solutions for them. “I like to let them know they have choices,” she smiles and remarks, “I’d never want to get cheated if it were me, so I try to find affordable solutions and really try to meet their needs.“ That means if the customer wants fancy and expensive, that’s what they get, but if they want simple and economical, well, they can get that, too. The key is offering a variety of options.

And, wow—options are in abundance in the Frames and Such shop! Shirley tries to make sure she has something available to everyone in all price ranges.

The least expensive option is to buy a premade frame in a predetermined size. Shirley has shelves upon shelves lined with hundreds of premade frame choices: from tiny silver ovals to fancy friends or family themed finds. You can even find wildlife themed frames or a carousel style photo holder among her treasures! There are free standing 5x7s with mini jewels, or plain black 16x20s (and bigger) composites with pre-cut mats.

There is also a wall with frames without glass just waiting for your artwork or picture to make a complete and finished product. Just add glass! Another option is to buy a frame kit where you buy 2 sides at a time in different lengths from 12 inches to 40 inches. You can choose from several wood tones, or choose unfinished wood so you can get exactly the color you need. There are also black and metallic options available. You can put it together yourself or Shirley can do it for you, and even help you choose and cut glass.

The most expensive choice is to have a custom frame built. And should that be what you need, you have over 1,000 different options available to you. You can come in, look around, see what fits your needs best, and then let Shirley quote a price for you.

Even more interesting, is that you can purchase a mat right there to compliment what you’re having framed. If one of the over 600 colors she has on hand doesn’t quite fit, she can order what you need. Then she’ll cut out the exact opening, or openings, you need using her computerized mat cutter.

What if you just need a new mat to freshen up some old artwork? No problem! Just bring it in and Shirley will help you find the perfect fit! Need something special done? You can order a shadow box for memorabilia or a mat cut out with your family’s name. They can also add a special touch with hand done calligraphy or an engraved metal plate.

She also offers a few special services. You can rent one her dozens of easels of every size for a wedding, special occasion or even a business presentation. She also has laminating services at very reasonable prices: from 80 cents for a small job to $2.25 for a letter sized sheet of paper. Feel free to stop by during business hours to have Shirley help you add those perfect finishing touches to your special art and pictures!
